shortcut on desktop

I have a shortcut on my desktop, which does not work. Yet
when I try to delte the shortcut, I get a message about
access denied, and cannot remove, delete or access the
shortcut. I do not know how it became a shortcut, but I
would like to know how to remove it from my desktop.

Right click the Recycle Bin/Properties/Check: Do Not Move Files to the
Recycle Bin...

Start/Run/Regedit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
