Short Date Turns to Long Date

I have a query that summarizes the amount of contributions received on any given day. It is formatted as a short date. But when I open this same query in a form for the user to view straight off of the switchboard, the format changes to long date, and then the dates are listed alphanumerically with April being the first month on the list rather than January. I chose short date in the properties box of this unbound list. How do I fix this?
