Shocking discovery

I recently noticed regular CPU usage spikes. It happens
exactly every 3 minutes. At first it is a smaller peak
and right after that a large one: 100% CPU usage for a
second.

Same thing happens on my laptop - at exactly the same
time. (Just that it doesn't reach 100% because the laptop
has a faster CPU: 2.4GHz while the desktop has 1.8GHz).

In task manager under processes I have found that it is
one of the "svchost.exe" processes (the one that uses
most mem) that causes this. I thought this had something
to do with msmsgs.exe (Windows Messanger) and maybe it
does.

So why is this and did anyone notice it? (It's a rather
huge spike, it can pause a game for a fraction of a
second for example).

Correction, it happens every 2 minutes not 3.

And it has something to do with msmsgs.exe. If I stop
that process - it will start running again at exactly the
time of the high CPU usage.
