Shell Unexpectedly Stopped - Explorer Restart

R

Ron Bennett

During file operations locally, the Explorer shell will
stop and Explorer will restart. File operations will stop
and most icons in tray will be removed (although they are
evidently still running based upon live processes).

Application Log:
Event 1002 Shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was
restarted.

System Log:
Event 3019 MRxSmb Redirector failed to determine
connection type.

Windows 2000 build 2195 (SP4 applied) and all windows
updates are current. This is occuring on two machines with
same build.

Look for a folder called smb in C:\Program Files\Common Files. Look in all subfolders.

If the MRXSMB error is occuring on every instance of the Explorer crash,
then I would start by installing the latest hotfix for mrxsmb.sys:
Q839083: "Your Windows 2000-based client computer stops responding when you
try to print a document that is stored on a network server"
support.microsoft.com/?id=839083

...the article does not outline your issue specifically, but that doesn't
mean that your issue won't be resolved by this hotfix (since there have
likely been several bugs fixed in this file since the version that you
currently have)
