What version of Internet Explorer are you running?

What service pack are you using?

What did it say in the event log about event 1002?

Internet explorer 6 (No SP)
W2K SP4
In the event 1002 it is described "the shell stopped
unexpectedly and the explorer.exe restarted".

Do you have any additional information on the error? Example: Error Number,
module, exe name (apart from explorer) etc. The are many things it can be &
the number will be easier to trace.

I have this exakt problem!
I run w2ksp4 and IE6 too.
And as I am writing this I restart my system for the 458th time today and
now it works...
The last things I tried was this (maybe it helps you too);
Put the 3dsmax6 CD1 in first cd-drive (its a long story).
Copied winnt\system32\comsvcs.dll from a different windows into this.
also backuped winlogon.exe and copied a new from the other windows.
Restarted. Winlogon gave bluescreen so I restored the backuped one.
Restarted again and all worked!

If you use 3dstudio I can tell the long story too.

Try this:

Start | Run | regedit | OK. Navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xml\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}

Export this registry key and save to a location you'll remember. You don't need to do this because we can get it back easily. But after you save it double-click the (Default) value on the right and then hit Delete. Say OK and reboot. Let me know how that turns out.

To get that entry back all you need do is either double-click the saved reg file or:

Start | Run | thumbvw.dll | OK | OK.

Hi George,

I just did. I will test it out and will let you know if explorer.exe
crashes again.

Thanks so much.

Where did you get this documented information about deleting this registry
value?

You should always back up your registry before making changes to it unless
you know what you are doing, but then its still advisable to back it up anyway

I did NOT say "delete the registry" and I DID say export the key first. What is your problem Crouchie1998?
