I am unable to deleate a trial version of Nero 8 because when I run the
uninstall program I get the error msg 'shell manager database is missing or
corrupt' It has only happened on this operation.
I have no XP installation disk to recover files from
 
Judging by reports in Google your problem is with Nero not Windows XP.

Try uninstalling in Safe Mode.
