Shell Manager Database Error Message

Shell manager database is corrupt or missing. The is the error message I get
when trying to add or remove a program. When I power on, I get this message:
Shell_NotifyIcon Fail
I have searched the MS library, downloads, faq's to no avail. I have done
system restores as far back as 45 days. Nothing helps. I have inquired of
my OEM without result. Any answers? Thanks,

Here I am again on this same thread because I'm getting no takers! I see
signatures that say Shell User so somebody out there knows something about my
problem. Plus I don't even know for sure what a shell is! Please, Please,
help!

why not try a windows repair. use your windows cd and select "repair" from
your desktop file browser or boot from cd. it should repair your windows and
leave everything else intact - as thought nothing has happened....

ps: i would restore your system to the most recent state so that the repair
recognizes you currently / recently installed programs.... after repair, i
would obstain from reinstalling any software that doesn't work afterwords.
windows probably over wrote the bad files in order to bring your system
operational again...

I don't have a Windows CD. I have 4 recovery CD's I made when I got my
computer. Windows was preloaded (of course). You think what I need is on
one of the recovery CD's? I have been reluctant to use them because I don't
want to wipe out everything on my hard drive. And the program I am trying to
install cost me an arm and a leg and I would really like to use it! (Nero 7
Ultra Edition)
Thanks so much for your answers.
