SHEARING OF INTERRUPT REQUEST LINE (IRQ)

My computer network card and the motherboard sound are shearing the same IRQ
11. Both the network card and the motherboard sound in the Device Manager
has the Use automatic settings under the Resource tab grayed out, so I am
unable to change the IRQ. IRQ 3 and 6 are available for use.

How do I set one of the devices to one of the available IRQ?

I notice that Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System is using IRQ9, is Microsoft
ACPI-Compliant System supposed to take-up an IRQ?

IRQ 0 System timer
IRQ 1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard
IRQ 4 Communications Port (COM1)
IRQ 5 VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
IRQ 5 VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
IRQ 8 System CMOS/real time clock
IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
IRQ 10 RADEON 7200 SERIES
IRQ 11 Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter(LNE100TX v4) #2
IRQ 11 Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) (WDM)
IRQ 12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse
IRQ 13 Numeric data processor
IRQ 14 Primary IDE Channel
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE Channel

This normally isn't a problem; are you experiencing troubles caused by
the normal situation?

How do I set one of the devices to one of the available IRQ?

Consult the motherboard's manual to see if such a capability is offered.

I was having problems with Windows XP crashing, so looked for problems and
saw the IRQ's which looked like problems to me. below is what the IRQ looked
like before I made changes.

IRQ 0 System timer
IRQ 1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard
IRQ 2 IRQ 8-15
IRQ 3 COM 2
IRQ 4 Communications Port (COM1)
IRQ 5 NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller
IRQ 6 FD Controler
IRQ 7 Parallel Port
IRQ 8 System CMOS/real time clock
IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
IRQ 10 RADEON 7200 SERIES
IRQ 10 NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller
IRQ 11 Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter(LNE100TX v4) #2
IRQ 11 Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
IRQ 11 Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) (WDM)
IRQ 12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse
IRQ 13 Numeric data processor
IRQ 14 Primary IDE Channel
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE Channel

I disabled the motherboard sound, took off one COM, disabled the FD, took
out the PCI USB card. After I made the changes, Windows XP works fine. I
would like to have the PCI USB card back in and the COM port enabled. If I
installed the PCI USB card back in, I think it will start sharing IRQs and
Windows XP will start to crash again. I do not understand why the PCI USB
card wants to use 3 IRQs.

Thank You,

Mike

For the future please note that there's a big difference between "shearing"
and "sharing" and it's more than the letter "e"...

When I first saw the title, I wondered "Why would anyone want to cut off an
IRQ line?"

Try moving the NIC to a different PCI slot. I don't think this will solve
your problem as IRQ sharing is not normally a cause for concern

Me too. It wasn't until about the second or third message in the thread that
the penny dropped... ;-)
