I can't get the "read-only" box to stay unset in the
general tab for the folders I want to share on my
network. The sharing and security boxes are checked as
they should be.

You cannot - this is by design - every folder you've created is
automatically read only - however the *FILES* inside the folder will be only
if you've set them to be. It makes no difference to sharing files across a
LAN (I know, I do it all the time).
