Sharing programs with Limited Users

S

Steve

I have admin rights and have install a few games for the
kids. I asked the guy i got the computer off and he said
to install them into C:\My Shared Documents\Games

I have done this and a few of the games work and there
are a few that dont.

One of the games i have installed "The Sims" wont let the
kids play it unless i run it first on my (Admin) account
and then close the program and let the kids sign in and
then it will work!

Is there some setting that i can change so the games will
work on the kids limited accounts.

As i dont like them to be on my Admin account.

Yours Steve

Your problem is probably that the game is accessing some directory or file
during startup that is not permitted.
You did not give the Operating System you are running on. In some cases, if
you found out which directory and file it is accessing you can change its
permissions.

With regard to the Sims, it may be that registry keys in LOCAL_MACHINE
need to be written and only the admin account can do that.

If your game or application works with admin accounts, but not with
limited accounts, you can fix it to allow limited users to access the
program files folder with "change" capability rather than "read" which
is the default.

C:\>cacls "Program Files\appfolder" /e /t /p users:c

where "appfolder" is the folder where the application is installed.

If you wish to undo these changes, then run

C:\>cacls "Program Files\appfolder" /e /t /p users:r

If you still have a problem with running the program or saving settings
on limited accounts, you may need to change permissions on the registry
keys. Run regedit.exe and go to HKLM\Software\vendor\app, where
"vendor\app" is the key that the software vendor used for your specific
program. Change the permissions on this key to allow Users full control.

You can choose to 'Run as..' your account from their accounts.
Do properties on the shortcut and then on advanced choose 'Run with
different credentials'. Then choose to run as your account.
They won't need to logon as you but can use the sims as if they were using
your account.

I have several programs that I have not been able to run
from limited accounts. I tried both the cacls and registry
changes listed below. These did improve things in that
the limited user was able to get farther before there were
error messages but my limited users can still not run the
programs. Are there other things that I can try?

You have probably run out of options with permissions. You could try
installing and/or running the applications using the Compatibility
Wizard.
