Sharing only works one way XP Pro to XP Home

Guest

I have done this many times without problems but I am stuck this time.
Two PC's, one running XP Home (OEM install) and XP Pro (OEM), both SP2. Both
running Zonealarm firewall with XP firewall turned off. I have enabled simple
file sharing on both. Both connected via a router, and members of the same
workgroup, with auto IP/DNS from the router.

The XP Home PC can see and browse the XP Pro PC without any problems.
However the XP Pro PC can see the XP Home PC in My Network Places, but when
access is attempted it gives an error message saying access is denied. In
desperation I have run the network setup wizard on both, but to no avail.

Does anyone else have any troubleshooting tips?

Thanks

Forgot to mention - I have tried with and without Zonealarm (and Zonealrm was
confogured to trust the local IP range anyway)

Peter,

Are you sure you have no overlooked firewalls?

If no firewalls causing problems, this is very likely a master browser conflict.

Please provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from both computers, so we
can diagnose your problem. Read this article, and linked articles:

Thanks for your reply Chuck. Definitely not a firewall issue (unless it is
corrupted in some way).

I will try your suggestion tomorrow.

My other research has pointed to problems with the guest account as a
possibility also.

Peter,

The Guest account (if using Guest authentication) or a non-Guest account (if
using non-Guest authentication) is always a possibility for "access denied".

The asymmetrical access problem is a classic symptom of a master browser
conflict.

As you have done this many times before without problem, your user accounts are probably configured correctly.

I don't think you need a master browser to network 2 peers.

From the XPpro command line type
net view \\xphomecomputername

If you get error 53 then you have my problem. It seems that the XPhome peer requester is working but the XPhome peer server is not responding. This failure to respond leaves no clue in any of the peer server logs and renders Ethereal unhelpful as a diagnostic tool.

Network Places might be remembering and presenting what it found when the peer server previously worked for a brief moment.

My experience with MS Wizards suggests that they are sorcerers in disguise.

Hi Chuck, your web site is very informative - great work.
Heres the progress report:

From XP Home:
Browstat works from XP home - only one master browser, couldnt open registry
key error=5 (very similar to an example on your web site - resulting from
browser using guest authentication)
Net View worked from XP Home
Ping OK

From XP Pro:
Browstat from XP Pro worked without the error 5 error.
Net View gave "access denied" error 5 from XP Pro
Ping OK

Further troubleshooting included uninstalling Zonealarm and installing
freshly downloaded copy (I also tested while it was uninstalled, and and also
when turned off when reinstalled)
Running an LSP repair tool.
Checking for system errors in the log files
Enabling guest account on both PCs and resetting the passwords to blank
Creating a new and identical account on both PC's

At this point I am contemplating either a refresh install or clean install
on XP Home which would be a pity as it is running well otherwise (has had
some minor spyware).

Thanks

Peter

Peter,

From your description it would sound like you've done most of the obvious checks
and configurations. Did you explicitly check everything in my main
troubleshooting guide?
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html>

Is this ZoneAlarm Free or Pro? What antivirus product do you have? Did you try
all 4 LSP / Winsock repairs?

Would you like to try and show us your "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all"
logs? Maybe we can diagnose something you've overlooked.

Hi Chuck, sorry I didnt reply - I was away on a break. I did finally resolve
this problem just before leaving. I had decided that a refresh install was in
order for the XP Home PC, but as it came with a SP1 CD I uninstalled SP2
before proceeding. This actually fixed the problem!!!. I then reinstalled SP2
and it still worked. My conclusion is that the Windows Firewall was still
doing something even though it was off. Either that or something else
permissions related. Certainly not the solution I had expected.

Thanks for your time - you did teach me some new aspects of networking as I
worked through the issues.

Peter,

Windows Firewall is always a candidate for causing problems - sorry that it took
an un install / re install of SP2 to figure it out.

Glad it was a learning experience for you. Thanks for the feedback, and the
update.
