Sharing External Drive

I have a Win XP Pro machine set up as a file and print server. I have an
external hard drive attached and sharing enabled. Also have 1 Mac with OS X
on the network. On a second XP Pro machine I cannot access the External hard
drive on the server; and on the Mac I cannot see the shared printer on the
Server. I get prompted in both instances for user name and password - but
when I put in the user name and password (using the one for the server) it
gives me an error message and won't let me connect. Tried resetting the
password on the server, creating an additional administrative account on the
server, still unable to connect. Any ideas?

I have not yet met one person who has managed to get a MAC sharing on a
Windows peer to peer network. Yes you can get internet access, but that's
the limit of the 'compatibility'.

I have file sharing enabled and working in both directions - I can see files
and folders on each machine from the other. Just having trouble with the
authentications thing on the external drive from the Win XP Pro machine and
authentication on the Mac when setting up the printer. I am using the user
name and password for the server when prompted but it does not work.
