Connecting to Remove Server

I am tying to connect to my office server from my laptop. I am running XP Pro
on my laptop and Windows 2000 on my server.

In My Network Places I go to "tools", "map netork drive", in the folder box
I type:
\\server IP address\drive to be shared. It successfully connects to the IP
address and prompts me with a login screen prompting me for a user name and a
password. So far so good....right?

The problem arrises when I enter my user name and password. It does not
connect to the server but rather reprompts me with the login screen only this
time the user name line is filled in with the IP address\the user name I just
entered and the password field is blank. I can't get anywhere from here. I
have tried to enter the password at this point and the screen just prompts
the same info again.

I am able to ping the Ip address ok.

I can also log on remotely to the server from this machine using a Remote
Desktop Connection that has been set up. When connecting to the server this
way I use the same user ID and password I tried to use before and it works
fine. The problem with this is that I cannot "see" the drive from my laptop
to access files which is why I am trying to map the drive.

Thanks!

I am thinking you may need to use domainname\username format. Or try to map it use net use with /U switch. This example may help,

Computer browser over VPNTo troubleshoot this issue, use net view command, for example, net view \\chicagotech ... for example, net use \\chicagotech password /u:ms-mvps\bob (here ...
