sharing a scanner

Is there a way to share a scanner over a network? I want to send faxes, so
how do I get the computer with the modem to become aware of the scanner,
which is connected to the OTHER computer on the network? The usual "detect
new hardware" methods don't work.

Is it a parallel port scanner or a usb scanner?

It's USB.

There are network-aware scanners, usually quite expensive. Check at HP's
site (or the mftr. of your choice). You cannot make a regular
consumer-level scanner network-aware.

Very few SOHO scanners have network capability, and probably less are compatible
with network capable fax software. What's the make and model? What fax
software are you using?

It's a Microtek ScanMaker X6, and I now realize that to have one that is
networkable I'd need to shell out a lot more dough. The fax software is
something that came with my other computer, a Dell.

I guess I'll go on doing what I've been doing: scan with the scanner, save
the image on the machine that's hooked up to the scanner, then use the fax
software on the other machine to suck in the image over the network and send
the fax through its modem. I send about one fax a month, so the extra effort
is not a real pain.

Of course, I could just connect the scanner to the machine that has the
modem, but I don't have enough desk space for it over there. Maybe I'll move
the modem instead.

Thanks to all for your comments.

Hi
Regular Scanners are Not Network capable Hardware.
You are much better off using one of these All in One Units.
Brothers Brand has All in One Units that are Network capable for less than
$200.
Jack (MVP-Networking).
