Shared workbook problem

On a client network, if I have a workbook on a network
share everything is fine. If I make it into a shared
workbook then every time I try to save to it the file
is deleted and a temporary file replaces it.

This happens on both (Win 2K) servers on the network
in question. It is not related to any particular work-
book, any one that is not shared works fine, any one
that is shared fails.

Interestingly it only happens if the workbook is
accessed via a network share. With a copy of Excel on
one of the servers I can make the workbook shared and
then use it just fine in a directory on the local
hard disk. *But* if I leave the workbook in the same
directory but share that directory and then access the
workbook from the same server, logged in as the same
administrator, it fails.

Any ideas would be welcome.

I'm not sure if it's the shared file attribute that's causing the problem.

The same kind of thing can happen with a single user working on a file.

When you save a file, excel will save it as a temporary file (8 characters, no
extension). Then if that save is successful, excel will delete the original and
rename this funny named file to the original's name.

You see the results when something interferes with this process.

A couple of things that get pointed at are antivirus software and network
problems (hardware or permissions).

Maybe you could disable the antivirus software (temporarily) to see if that
helped. (if the problem went away by disabling the AV software, maybe a visit
to its site to see if there are any upgrades available???)

But since you say that it only happens on a folder on the LAN, it could be a
network problem.

If it's not the antivirus software, maybe it's time to get your IT department
involved. Have them check permissions again?????

Thanks for the suggestions Dave.

Yes, it is definitely network related. It is not however permissions
related,
I'm pretty sure on that as if the workbook is set to be a regular (not
shared)
notebook then it works fine, if it is set to be a shared workbook then on
the
same network share with the same user it fails. Plus I've tried it as an
administrator with all permissions and it makes no difference.

I am the IT department!
