shared templates

What is the best practice for using templates with word ?

Currently the normal.dot is shared on a network location, from what i have
read this is not the way to go.

Sharing normal.dot doesn't work: each user needs their own copy.

Go to Tools > Options > File Locations. Set 'Workgroup Templates' to point
to a shared network folder (you have to do this on each user's computer). In
that shared folder, store the templates you want everybody to use. Those
templates will show up automatically when people use File > New.
