Shared printer

I have set up my desk top as the "server" for a USB connected printer and a
laptop. However, I have to turn off the Microsoft Firewall on the desk top
for the laptop to be able to print. I have checked shared printer on
exceptions.

We have a wireless network.

Anyone know why this is or is this the price we pay to share a printer?

I have up-to-date virus and spyware software installed on both computers.

does the printer have special status software that attempts to send status
to the other machine. If so find out the firewall port the printer software
needs to communicate with the sharing machine?
