Shared folder looses shared status

Recently a folder on an external USB drive has been loosing it's shared
status at random. eg I find a nightly backup failed with a "failed to open"
error. When I look I find the reason is because the destination folder is no
longer shared.

Any fix?

Check the power management for that usb device from within its
Properties in Device Manager. Make sure that Windows isn't allowed to
turn the device off. Another thing to check would be the physical power
source for that device. Is it on a powered hub which might be plugged
into an "iffy" power source? Look into using a UPS.
