Shared File reverts to read only instantly

I have moved folders in my documents to shared folders, changed attributes in
files and folders to share and allow changes on my home network. I do this
through Windows Explorer in the shared folders file including the folder and
all files within.
when I click on the properties of the folder it reverts to "read only."
I change it again by properties, clear read only, change attributes again to
allow file sharing and changing and click apply, OK. When I check the folder
it reverts to "read only" again.
If I open an individual file it appears to be not read only, but when I
copy it to a disc it is "read only" again!
I have been reading and doing this for 24 hours and am frustrated.

Are you using XP Home or Pro? You may not have the correct permissions to
change the attributes. If XP Home, make sure you are an Administrator, for
Pro, make sure you are member of the Administors group. Hope that helps.

It is not saying it is read only but indeterminate so there's not much more one can say. What Disk - a CD, cause it will be read only - CDs are read only.

I am the administrator of my home network. I changed the attributes on the
files on my C drive by selecting and clicking OK. When I right click that
file and look at properties it states "read only" on the file folder. Why
even though I unclick its read-only box?

As to the CD, do you mean I must use a CD drive that has read-write
capablities to create a RW disc for my laptop?

When I try to open Shared Docs from my desktop my laptop responds with a
error path even though it is listed in the network folders from my desktop.
Still confused.

1. It is not saying read only. Click it a few times. It is saying indeterminate. IE It is not saying anything at all to you but waiting for you to say remove RO (click) or add RO (click twice).

2. CD are made. Your computer makes CD. They are not disks. They are things you buy in stores, but technology leaped and it became possible to put a small factory in every computer. Think of them as a factory product.

Most computers (with third party burning software) come with software that makes diska act like a floppy. But this is dumb. CDs aren't designed to work this way and are very slow at turning on (autoplay is slow isn't it - the faster the disk the longer it takes to get to speed) and finding the right part of the disk is 100's of time slower than a disk. This is because they are designed to be fast at reading continious data like CD music.

What David Candy says. When I look at any file whose permissions are
inherited from its parent, the box is 'greyed'. If I click on that it
either clears or is checked. Click one a few times as David suggests and
watch it change.

This one also stumped me for a loooongish time!

Cheers,

Cliff
