Shared drives

I run XP SP3 and have an issue with a shared portable drive.

I connect a portable drive via USB to one machine and make it shared so that
other machines can backup to it.

It works ok but when I restart the machine it becomes unshared.

Anyone have any thoughts as to how to make this a permanently shared drive?

I am not an expert about this, but to make this drive a permanent share,
you would have to keep it on the machine at boot-up, otherwise Windows
will waste a lot of time looking for it each time it boots up.
