Shared Documents Folder renamed and unaccessible

Danny

This is regarding Windows XP Pro.

In My Computer there are several folders under "Files
Stored on This Computer" one of them is "Shared
Documents". I am not sure how this happened but for some
reason this folder got renamed "Documents" and I cannot
access it even with Administrator privileges. This
happened once before and logging out solved the problem
(the folder was again named "Shared Documents" but now it
happened again and logging out or restarting doesn't
help. The folder is named "Documents" for all users of
the computer and is not accessible to anyone.

Does anyone know a fix?

Thanks.

It's complete name is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents.
Check the properties and see that this isn't made private. If the box is
checked, but grayed out, you may have to boot to safe mode to fix the
permissions so that all Users may read and write this folder.

Thanks for the reply.

The correct name is indeed C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Documents. However, the folder is not private. The
boxed is not checked but it is grayed out.

Hi

Try to take ownership and see if it helps:

I encountered the same problem today. I have a New Dell machine running XP
Home SP2. I installed XP Office, Norton Internet Security 2004, and
transfered files from my old computer. I suspect the File and Settings
Transfer utility did it but I didn't notice it had changed until I started
organizing the transfered documents.

The files and sub-folders I created in "Shared Documents" remain but
something renamed the folder to "Documents" and it cannot be renamed manually.

Has anyone learned of a way to return the folder name to "Shared Documents"?

Thanks.

Hi, I had the same problem and after continuous research I was able to
rename "Documents" back to "Shared Documents". This involves using the
registry editor and it should be backed up prior to editing.

1) Make sure that you have the following string/value:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache
Value: @shell32.dll,-21785
Data: Shared Documents
(If not, add it)

2) Reboot and open the Registry Editor again.

3) Go to the following:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\LocalizedResourceName
Value: @shell32.dll,-21785
Data: Documents (This is what I had prior to changing it)

4) Change:
Data: Documents
to
Data: Shared Documents

5) Reboot and you should be good to go.

HTH.

That was unavailable to solve my problem. I’ve changed the registry keys, I
had changed the desktop.ini file, but the god dam ‘documents’ doesn’t changed
his name to ‘Shared Documents’
I’m getting desperate.

If anyone had another solution …
