Shared Dial-Internet Access Over Router

Clar

Have PC1 (Win/98 SE) and PC2 (Win/XP Home) - have PC1
connected to PC2 with crossover cable - PC1 and PC2 can
view and share resources on the other PC. If PC2 is
dialed to the ISP, PC1 can access the Internet across the
connection (shared access).

Preparing for soon to be available DSL I have setup both
PC1 and PC2 on a router. Again, PC1 and PC2 can view and
share resources on the other PC. But now PC1 cannot
access the Internet thru PC2 when PC2 is dialed into our
ISP. I am planning to retain the dialup for backup and
special needs and would like to be able to utilize the
shared access thru the router as we now do thru the
crossover cable.

Is this possible?? Suggestions?

Have you set PC1's default router as PC2? Windows
network advertises services, but for Inet connectivity
PC1 needs to know the next hop to the Inet.

Yes, it's possible. Connect both computers to the router's LAN ports.
When you get DSL, connect the DSL modem to the router's WAN port.

To share the DSL connection through the router:

1. Disable Internet Connection Sharing on PC2's dial-up connection.
2. Enable the router's built-in DHCP server so that the router gives
IP addresses to both computers.

To share the dial-up connection through the router:

1. Enable Internet Connection Sharing on PC2's dial-up connection.
2. Disable the router's built-in DHCP server so that PC2 gives an IP
address to PC1.

After switching from one configuration to the other, use Start | Run |
Winipcfg to release and then renew the IP address on PC1.
