"Shared by me" search results always empty

David

When i have shared folders or files, clicking on the Shared By Me search
feature returns an empty result set. Does this feature work for anyone?
If it does, did you have to do anything unusual to get it to function?
All the other canned searches return appropriate results, such as
"Recent Documents", "Recent Music", "Recently Changed", etc.

Please note that i do have the Public folder shared and it is visible
from another computer on the network. Yet the "Shared By Me" results
are empty. I tried this on two Vista machines.

Seems to work here

Looks like the search should return shared files / folders, that are owned
by you, in

C:\Users\Public
and
C:\Users\*YourUserName*

Some things to try....
-'Public Folder Sharing' Enabled in 'Network and Sharing Center' for the
network profile you're using
-Set up an account on the local machine with the username that you want to
share it with
-Right-click folder > 'share' > Change Sharing Permissions > Add the user
you want

This also shows you what is currently being shared....
Start > Search > Shared:true (in top-right box)
(or Start > Search > System.IsShared:true )

You could also set up and save your own similar search
Start > Search > (Shared:true) AND (Owner:YourUserName)
[or Start > Search > (System.IsShared:true) AND
(System.FileOwner:YourUserName) ]

Iirc files need to be present in the shared folder for it to appear.

Jon, thanks for the reply. I already DEFINITELY have a bunch of shared
files and folders, accessible from other PCS, yet the "shared by me"
function returns nada. I also did start, shared:true, with similar
results. I tried on 2 PC's. the files are shared, but the search
doesn't show a thing!

That is odd. The only other thing I can think is that perhaps there's a
problem with indexing on the machines.

You can have a look in

Control Panel (Classic View) > Indexing Options

to see the current status of indexing on the machine.

Jon, I checked the indexing options--"Users" is being indexed and thats
the folder that has numerous files/folders shared under it. any other
ideas?

If indexing is working fine, and on a grass roots level, so is sharing, then
you've perhaps stumbled across some discrepancy in the way explorer regards
files / folders as shared or not. This might relate to the particular way in
which you set up the shares ie whether by the command line (net share ..),
via the sharing wizard (right-click > Properties > Sharing > Share..), or
via some other method (eg right-click > Properties > Sharing > Advanced
sharing). You could experiment with each of those approaches to see whether
using another method of sharing enables the shares to appear in the Search
index.

From what I can see, if a folder is successfully shared (as far as the index
is concerned), then it appears in explorer with the characteristic 2 people
overlay on the folder icon. If your shared folders lack this, then that
would be an indicator that something is not quite right.

Another test to see whether it's anything to do with index corruption would
be the following

Start > Search > System.Search.GatherTime:today
Start > Search > System.Search.GatherTime:yesterday

If both of those turn up a blank, then something may be preventing the index
from adding any more entries eg corruption of some kind.

The folder icon does indeed include the sharing style image. Keep in
mind this lack of "shared by me" results is happening on 2 new laptops
from different mfgrs. Plenty of shared files/folders are available, yet
the results continue to be empty.
