Shared Borders and Subwebs

My website (FP 2000) uses a shared border for all root level pages and also
has a subweb. In the subweb I also use a shared border for some pages but
FP 2000 seems to require that the subweb shared border be the same shared
border used for the main web. Is this by design? Can I use a different
shared border for the subweb?

You would have use separate navigation, themes and shared borders in a subweb. Subweb are completely
independent of the root web.

My main web does use a theme, a navigation bar, and shared top and bottom
borders. The subweb does not use a theme or navigation bars but a few of
the pages uses a shared bottom border. But the subweb insists on using the
border from the main web.

Are you saying that my subweb will have to use its own theme in order to use
its own shared border?

No, you have to create a specific bottom share border or copy the one from the root web to the
subweb, and make any link in it, absolute back to the root web.

If you insert the same shared border from the root web and then make any changes to it, it will not
update the subweb/subsite.

When I view the subweb from FP2000, the "_borders" directory and other
FP-generated directories are not seen. When I view the subweb from MS
Explorer, all the FP-generated directories are there including "_borders","
_derived", "_themes", etc are all there as well as similar directories under
the root directory. Strange.

With the subweb open in FP, go to Tools | Web Settings | Advanced tab and enable viewing of hidden
directories.

Hi Bob,

As I know, you can use different shared borders for the main site and the subsite. You can try the steps below in FrontPage 2000.

1. Create a web site in FrontPage 2000.
2. Apply a Shared Border to the web site and configure only the top.
3. Create a new folder under the web root.
4. Right click the folder and then click "Convert to Web"
5. Double click the converted subsite.
6. Apply a Shared Border to the subsite and configure only the left.
7. Save changes.

Now you can see the main web site and the subsite use their own shared border.

I hope the information helps.

Jason, is there a way to do this after the website and subweb have already
been developed? When I added the subweb, I didn't follow the procedure you
described.

Just open the subweb in FP and apply your unique shared borders

Hi Bob,

As Stefan suggested, you can simply open the main site in FrontPage, double click the subsite, and then apply its own Shared Borders.

Basically, a subfolder under the web site root does not have unique Shared Borders but a subsite does.

I hope the information helps.
