Shading vs. Highlighting

In Word 07, what is the difference between 'shading' and 'highlighting'?

I know one can use 'Find' for highlighting and 'shading' has many
more color options, but is there more to it than that?

Yes, there's more to it.

The biggest difference is that shading can be made part of a style, while
highlighting can't.

Other differences:

- Through the Borders & Shading dialog, you can specify whether the shading
applies to the selected piece of text, the whole paragraph containing the
selection, or (if the selection is in a table) a cell or the whole table.
Highlighting applies only to the selected text or text you drag across while the
highlighter is active.

- Besides color, shading can include patterns (cross-hatching, diagonal lines,
etc.).

- If you're programming a macro, the two features are handled completely
differently.

Generally, although both can serve the same purpose of emphasizing particular
parts of the document, shading is intended more as a decorative feature.

Jay,

Thanks for the great explanation of the differences.
