SFC/WFP problem

Is there any way to determine what files SFC/WFP is trying to recover when it
asks for a Windows XP CD2?

This is on a preloaded Gateway laptop that came with only a system restore
CD. Neither that nor either of the two other restore CDs create by the
Gateway recovery media creation process are accepted by SFC when that prompt
appears.

This happens even though there is an i386 folder in the root of the original
restore CD and also one of the two others created.

I've seen many posts describing how to modify the registry to try and make
SFC look in the proper place for the files, but none of that seems to have
helped. I even tried copying that folder to another folder on the hard drive
in case there is a corrupt file in the one built by Gateway. Again, even
after pointing the registry entry to this new location, I am still prompted
for the Windows XP CD2 disk.

It appears that SFC tries to recover five files. When the prompt occurs and
I can't insert a disk that is acceptable, I select cancel and I get prompted
four more times.

I trtied looking at the event log to see if there was anything describing
what WFP was trying to recover, but the entries only show some numeric code.

I think if I could determine which files are being requested, I might find
some other way to recover them.

FYI, the problem stems from a failure of IE6 to access the internet. All
other browsers (FireFox, NetScape, Opera, and K-Meleon) have no problems and
my email applications also have no trouble.

The various posts I found, and other assistance I have been given in the
newsgroups here, and also two others, all seem to end up with the requirement
to run SFC at some point. So I haven't had any success trying to fix that
problem.

Thanks.......

Thanks, Daphne,

That takes care of the second question I was going to ask.

What I still need to know is how to find out what files SFC/WFP was trying
to recover. When it prompted me for the Windows XP CD2, there was nothng to
indicate which file it was looking for, and the event log didn't have any
specifics either.

Thanks again,
Joe

BTW, Daphne,

I have since found that by clicking on an event (one that has only the
numeric code I mentioned) I can see details about what file SFC/WFP was
trying to recover. So your explanation of how to recover them would come in
handy.

That is...IF they are actually required.

It turns out that I was able to find something by doing an advanced search
on Gateway that their own tech reps coudln't find.

They explained that SFC/WFP is reporting missing files on Media Center
systems that are not actually required to run Media Center. They pointed to
an MS KB article where this was further explained, and where it was
acknowledged that this is a known problem.

So it's good news and bad news......good that I don't need the files, but
bad that they are not the cause of my IE problem.
