SFC Question

I just got my computer back from HP. I sent it there because the SFC /scannow kept asking
for a disk the Windows Professional XP CD2 which I don't have and the CD only has one
disk. I have the Media center Edition. I thought this would only happen if I have to fix
some files. My system has been completely redone. I tried putting in my Recovery disks 1,
2, and 3 but they didn't work.
It still did the same thing when I sent it back.

I know that there is two different fixes at both MS Web site to rename two files the
Fp40ext.inf and Ims.inf files in the inf folder and also a fix at Scannow sfc. Don't
remember the web address. I tried both of these and neither worked.

I talked to three different people and two of them have this same problem. The third one
said that after SFC finishes it just stops which I think is the right way.

Please let me know. Any information would be appreciated.

The Generic OEM version of WinXP MCE comes on 2 CDs, and that is what
sfc is expecting to see, not HP recovery disks, or WinXP Pro single CD.
Unfortunately sfc isn't really a useful utility when purchasing a PC
from the likes of HP.

Now if you have a friend with the Generic OEM version of WinXP MCE, burn
a copy of both CDs, and then run sfc, and that should work, BUT it may
break HP's BIOS-Locking mechanism, and you MAY have to activate after
running it.

Next time you buy a PC, make sure you get REAL MSOS reinstall disks with
it.

Thanks for your help. I don't know anyone with that OEM. My daughter has a Dell but not
MCE just Home edition.
I guess I have to wait for Vista. (Maybe out by June!)
