Hi!lou!

If sfc discovers that a protected file has been overwritten, it
retrieves the correct version of the file from the
systemroot\system32\dllcache folder, and then replaces the incorrect
file.It Scans and verifies the versions of all protected system files
after you restart your computer.

How can you tell if it found anything wrong? Thanks.

I think the progress bar halts and a dialogue box appears, stating the
obvious. Then you have to choose [Retry] or ?[Abort] (Cancel, Exit or
similar, I can't remember which). Clicking [Retry] effects a resumption of
the check progress. When a System File Check is performed immediately after
a clean install of WinXP, before any other pregramme is installed (or even
run), there is never any halt in the process, in my experience, and so it
should be. But when the running of programmes misbehaves, often -- not
always -- [Retry] interrupts 20 or more times. Even more than 100 times in
my one recent past instance. I have not found the SFC helpful in resolving
any of the issues I have had so far.
