Since I have copied my Win XP Pro SP1 CD contents onto my hard drive, is
there a way I can get the SFC routine to look on the hard drive for the
files instead of prompting for the CD? Thanks.

You can point the registry entry for ServicePackSourceFiles to the correct
directory (folder).

Caution: Mistakes in editing the registry can hose XP.

I searched the Registry for ServicePackSourceFiles but could not find this.
Could you point me to the right entry please?

Thanks.

Hi Gary,

Load the I386 folder from the CD to the hard drive. Start/run regedit and
change the sourcepath string to match the new location under this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Hi Gary - IF you're comfortable working with the Registry, then BACKUP your
Registry first, then go to

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

In the right pane, change the value of SourcePath to point to the
i386 folder that you stored on your HD using a complete path name. (In my
case, for example, it's E:\PRO\i386 since PRO is the root folder
I've stored my Win2kPro CD at on my E: partition) Then reboot.

See if that does it for you. If you're not comfortable with what I just
wrote, then either get some assistance from someone knowlegable or leave it
alone.

The source path to the Service Pack's installation files is stored in this
registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

If this is a CD of just SP1 which you bought to use, the files should be
on Hard disk already as C:\windows\ServicePackFiles
once you have run it to install.

If you have deleted that, or moved it. then Start - Run - regedit.exe
Open to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Change the value of ServicePackSourcePath in the right pane to take you
to the folder containing the \i386 folder copied from the CD
If there is no line of that name, use Edit - New - String value to make
it

SourcePath should point to the original CD, or if you copy that as well,
to a folder containing *its* \i386. And that is the only entry needed
if yours is a complete installation CD 'With ServicePack 1'

I believe you should also change the value of the sub-key
CDInstall to 0 in that same Source Registry Key
