sfc.exe - intelligent enough to take account of SP2?

I run the XP (command-line) System File Checker from time to time, by way of
a first step in resolving any slowdowns or other sudden weirdness.

My question is, when replacing 'damaged of corrupted protected files in
their original versions and locations', does the app overwrite previously
updated versions (e.g. installed during the SP2 upgrade) with the
'originals' from the install disk?

If not, then is there an online versions which allows web downloads of
latest versions of the necessary files, instead of asking for the original
(pre-SP2) install disk?

I ask as I'm still battling with a long-term problem with reading either
floppies or external USB drive media - Windows thinks they're unformatted,
but I know they're not (as do other machines).

I'd appreciate some insight here, please.

Thanks, as always...

Hi Roger,

System File Checker can distinguish between SP2 files and older files and if
the files are not found on the drive it should ask for the appropriate CD
containing the files needed.

If the system shipped with a Windows XP install disk (not an OEM recovery
disk) a Slipstream version can be created containing the SP2 files.

Thanks for this - a useful resource.

I just hope that one way or another I can fix the underlying problem with
external media drives being mis-read as unformatted...
