SFC broke after SP2?

System File Checker is no longer functioning properly since SP2.
I can't even run "sfc.exe /scannow" from a prompt.

What happens is, it starts, then not long into it, it issues the following:

"...Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to
the DLL Cache.
Insert your Windows XP Home Eidtion CD-ROM now..."

First of all, why is it asking for the original CD when SP2 is installed?
Shouldn't it be looking first at:
windows\System32\dllcache, then secondly for:
windows\ServicePackFiles
(both of which btw, are intact)?

Even if I insert the original XP Home CD, it repeats the message with a
"retry" button enabled.
Clicking on "More Information" only brings up:
"...Possible reasons for this problem: You inserted the wrong CD -or- The
CD-ROM drive in your system is not functioning..." - both of which are not
true.

I checked the registry keys under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-SOFTWARE-Microsoft-Windows-CurrentVersion-Setup
and found the following:

ServicePackCachePath = c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\ServicePackCache
ServicePackSourcePath = c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\

The Cache path shown above doesn't exist - should it?

I don't know how to fix this... anybody with suggestions?

Even with the pop-up,Sfc will still function, you just have to keep pressing
the enter key for the cd.However if youve added a hd,or if the cdrom letter
has been reassigned, then you'll need to change it to match whats listed in
"my computer" for the unit.Open regedit,HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,software,
microsoft,windows,set-up,then open source path.Locate the cdrom,L.click on
it,go to edit,modify,change the letter,then close-out regedit,restart
computer.
You might also type in cmd:Sfc /Scannow REVERT

You need to add SP2 to your original XP disk(slipstream) basically create a
new disk.More info and a free program to do it can be found here:

It is aking you to insert your original CD because that is what it is supposed to do. Windows Systems needs to recopy original DLLs just in case you delete unintentionally any systems files. Windows has an automatic restore procedure where your system is out right in case of attack accidentally. ths is one good reason to have a backup CD (of OS) near your PC! I have all of then including MSOffice, WordPerfect Office, Roxio, Nero, Symantec etc etc.

It also need to compare the DLLs in the cache with the on on the CD. Once you have done this, you will need to run SP2 installation all over again. Good way to keep busy for somene who has nothing better to do. Installation of SP2 takes at least 1 hour before you have fine-tuned your system such as defrag and scan etc. You also need to fine-tune certain progs such as FTP and Nortons.

Other way around, but still - run regedit.exe and look at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

for the values of ServicePackSourcePath and ServicePackCachePath
both of which should be C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles
