SFC and SP1 / SP2 : how ?

P

Pivert

Hi,

if I do an SFC / scannow, teh process requires the original CD ( which I
have).
Now I have applied all updates since install, including the SP1 one, and
build a slipstreamed CD of XP-Pro & SP1. That CD is never accepted : normal
? What happens to teh files that have been replaced by Microsoft updates
when SFC run ? Do they need to be re-replaced by the updates ( but then how
know which ones ?)

Or is my CD defect ( never used to do a "direct-SP1" full install)

TIA

Hi

Have you created a slipstreamed SP2 CD? If so use that one when Windows
asks for a CD. If not, have a look for a folder named i386 in Windows
Explorer and point to that when asked for the CD.

Thanks for pointing to i386
I have an SP2 slipstreamed CD, but it has been rejected. Should I point to a
folder on the CD or just the CD's root ?
Or should I consider that the CD is somehow bad ?

Hi

How did you updgrade to SP2? Did you use the slipstreamed SP2 CD to 'Clean'
install XP? If so, it shouldn't be rejected. If the CD is corrupt in any
way, I wouldn't have thought it could have been used to install XP.

No I have NOT yet installed SP2 ( have tried but got a persistent freeze
after boot screen, and had to restore an image of partition before SP2
install to get it working again - despite enough free space,
AdAware/NAV/SpyBot/Spysweeper/CWshredder scans, no USB devices connected, no
autostarts at all .... : perhaps my graphics adapter ? But tired of spending
hours updating, so will wait till MS no more produces updates for the "silly
SP2 refractory people").

Have build a slipstreamed CD using my XP Pro CD & the SP2 update file using
a "slipstreaming utility" from a german PC Magazine to build it, in the idea
that later I would ( since have not been able to update) clean install XP
Pro directly with SP2 "build-in".

Hi,

Note: For some, just having the i386 folder open while running the SFC
helps. Otherwise change the path leaving off the i386.

More info:

Q. Will running an SFC /Scannow on an XP SP1 machine *keep* all updated
system files (found only on the hard drive and *not* on the XP CD) and leave
SP1 intact?

A. The updated files are in the folder Windows\ServicepackFiles. The .inf
files that tell SFC where to get copies from are modified so that for
relevant files it goes there first.

One thing you can do (best if you have two CD drives) is to burn that folder
complete to CD; then with go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup.

In the right pane, change the value of ServicePackSourcePath accordingly;
using the CD drive letter different from the original CD in 'SourcePath'.
Then if files are needed you can have one CD in each drive.

SFC asking for SP1 CD

Put the regular CD in the drive first, exit its Autorun, then run the
SFC. It should then find the SP1 files in the Windows\ServicepackFiles
folder, and go on from there to the versions on the regular CD.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup.
In the right pane, change the value of ServicePackSourcePath for those
having SP1 on CD and wanting to route it separately.

Mixed info from previous posts and MVP Alex Nichol.

Let us know what worked for you and good luck!

Normally when you install SP1 (or SP2) a folder is made in
Windows\servicepackfiles to contain all the SP files. SFC will look
there first before going on to ask for a CD
