'Severe' Error "Not compatible with Windows NT"

I'm using Windows XP but when I try to load some software programs I get the error message
i.e."(Software) not compatible with Windows NT"
I've had no problems loading the same software before but now seem to get this message....any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try Using the Compatibility Wizard
Start>Programs>Accessories
Set the software to run in win98 compatiblity mode
This worked for me for some pretty old games.
