several instances of outlook.exe running

Hi,
Under XP Pro I had the problem that Outlook on occasion would not correctly
shut down, that is, there was a outlook.exe that stayed in the processes in
the taskmanager. Every time I opened Outlook it would add an instance, then,
after about 3 or 4 were running, Outlook would no longer start ... no error
message, nothing. If I went into the taskmanager and killed the additional
outlook.exe instances it would start normally.

So, now I am in Vista Business Ultimate with Outlook 2007 ... and its doing
the same thing!

Did anyone ever encounter and solve this issue?

I am aware of this KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/196366/en-us

I cannot reliably reproduce the behavior. I went through days of testing
situations in order to MAKE outlook do this, on and off. There is no
specific program running when it stays in the process pool, often Outlook
was the only thing running when it happened.

1) Fax software
2) Antivirus software
3) Antispam software
4) Synchronization software (such as that for a handheld)
5) Add Ins or COMs

Thank you Kathleen, unfortunatly the reason for my problem seems to be a bit
more elusive. No fax software installed, if the antivirus would be the cause
it would happen reliably, or at least more often (plus others with the same
setup don't have the problem), antispam it MS software that did not run
under XP, no synch software installed ... and add ins or coms ... well, that
is a large field, unless you mean those installed specifically for Outlook,
and there and don't have any installed, Outlook 2007 is running as it
installed out of the box.

I am not the only one with the problem. However, not everyone is able, or
knows, to check the task manager for additional processes. I don't want to
know how many simply uninstalled outlook saying that the software is buggy
or doesn't run on their PC without ever realizing what caused the case of
the not-starting Outlook.

if there are any more ideas out there I'll take them.
