Several i386 directories

I install Windows XP, then copy the i386 cirectory to the C: drive. (C:\i386)
I then install SP2, and noticed it has a directory
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\I386.

My question is, do I need both on my system, or can I get rid of the C:\i386

Thanks in advance.

The "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\I386" directory contains
the new SP2 files. Do not delete this directory. This folder is
the same as the dllcache, but has the new files that were updated
by the Service Pack.

So , is it safe to delete the C:\i386 directory and leave the
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\I386 directory?

Or do I need to combine them somehow?
I'm trying to free up disk space on some of my older systems.

Thanks.
