setup error message: "not enough memory"

Roland

hello all,

I'm trying to install WIN XP Pro on an IBM ThinkPad R40.
In the textmode of the installation (after copying some
files) I get the following error message (translated from
german, so I don't know the exact words in an english
version): "Not enough memory. Setup cannot be continued.
Setup must be closed. Please press ENTER."

I've tried 512 MB RAM or 256 MB RAM, I've changed the RAM-
modules - the error message is always the same.

Has anyone suggestions what it might be?

Thanks
Roland

I have experienced this problem and it was to do with available DOS
(textmode) memory.
However, I had lots of extras loading in the DOS boot such as network client
software, a RAM drive, a CD driver and smartdrv.

In the end I got rid of the most of it except smartdrv and everything went
OK.

How are you accessing the WINXPPRO media?

How are you accessing the WINXPPRO media?
I'm accessing it through network.

Now I've disabled EMM386.EXE in CONFIG.SYS and the first
tests look like it might work.

thanks
Roland
