Setup crash

I purchased an additional license for XP Home. The
computer stops responding during the "preparing for setup"
phase. I have tried clean boot, booting from the cd, and
calling microsoft. I have cleaned the registry. I found
a setup log that says:
Info UpgradeModuleBuild: 2600
Error:
Setup detected a crash on the previous upgrade attempt.
Setup is runnign in safe mode. [ERROR=183 (B7h)]

Any ideas.
Thank you

Have you disabled virus checking in the BIOS?
Have you disconnected all external hardware?

If the answer to the above is yes, then I would begin to suspect either
faulty memory or HDD.

The answer is yes. Is there a way to check if the memory
or HDD is the problem?
Thanks

Google for a program called memtest or memtest386 to test your memory.
Check the website of the manufacturer of your HDD for a diagnostic utility.
