I could not find this issue anywhere else in the thread (I might have missed
it so let me know if someone has an answer to this.) The process that got us
here is pretty simple at least to me. So here goes...

I have a machine that I recently installed Windows XP Professional. The CD
that I bought to do this with was labeled "Now Includes Servie Pack 2". The
installation went very well. I also used the Windows update service and
loaded all the current fixes to everything (as of Friday this week).

Well we had some power issues and the machine went up and down a bit. And
today when I tried to bring it up I was getting an error paraphrased it said
"the program service.exe is attempting to write to location 0x000001". The
only choice was OK or CANCEL to debug so I said OK. Naturally the stupid
machine did not come up all the way. Running in safe mode showed a log entry
again paraphrasing "Services.exe v 5.1.2600.2180 modle esent.dll v
5.1.2600.2780 @ 0x0070821 failed".

Well I thought hey not to worry this installation is only a few week old
let's boot from the CD and do a repair!

So went into "setup", selected the "repair" and things ran along for
sometime. But then out of no where the error message came up "Setup can not
copy the file "idew.ex_ insure disk labeled Windows XP Profession Service
Pack 2 CD is in the drive."

Well of course it was in the drive. I did a browse and saw exactly what
appeared to be the file. But everytime I said "retry" or "open" that one on
the CD I got the same message. What is going on here.

I don't have a seperate CD for Service Pack Two since my CD says "Now
Includes Service Pack 2". Plus the file it is asking for is clearly visible
in the directory "i386" that it is pointing to.

At this point I thought to just cancel and so I went throught a large number
of files that appeared to me to be on the CD but the install process refused
to accept.

So any ideas on what is going on here?

Everything seemed that it would be so easy so what is causing this to happen
and how do I get the repair thing to work?

Any help is appreciated.

Bernie
