setup can not copy file

Windows XP Home. I accidently removed a key in the registry(don't ask, it
was dumb), So the desktop was black, no taskbar but did have a mouse. So I
tried to do a repair. First with the repair console by running chkdsk. then
with setup. but it stops when it starts coping files the first error is:
cannot copy the file vgaem.fon. I tried "retry", I tried continue skipping
that file. None of the files can be copied. I put the drive as a slave on
another computer. I tried to work in the windows folder and get the message
"Access denied" The windows folder in properties is marked read only. I
cannot get the read only to stay off.

Loretta,

The read-only flag for a folder does not really matter. As Rick said, you
need to take ownership of that folder and then you can access / backup the
contents.

In future, backup the registry (in addition to creating a System Restore

I found that even as a slave I could not access Windows. With your help I
was able to resolve this.
I know have another/old problem that I will repost for.
