Settings Transfer with Ethernet Patch Cable

Can I use XP's Files and Setting Transfer with a "Patch Cable?" This is an
Ethernet cable designed to connect two PCs without the use of a network hub.
I found this cable at OfficeMax. The sales guy there could not answer my
question.

Nothing in any of the articles below mention the use of the patch cable I
described. Am I safe to assume that this type of cable will not work?

By "patch cable" do you mean crossover cable? I've seen sales people call
crossover cables, patch cables. You need a crossover cable.

From what you describe, it sounds like the "Patch Cable" is really a
crossover cable and it will do fine for transferring the files.

I be better off using floppies or CDs?

Very fast, and if you have lots of files to transfer, a single CD would not
be large enough. Forget about floppies, it would take thousands.
