settings question

Not sure if this is the correct news group but..here goes..
I have a brand new laptop, I have installed all that I need to get things up
and running (java, flash etc..) but when I go to play a game called
Runescape it has a world map pop up as an extra feature. Normally it runs an
exe on request when prompted but all I get is a pop up with a blank black
square, inside at the top left corner is a small white box with a red cross
inside. No exe prompts me to run it. I have dissabled pop up blocker and the
firewall settings seem to be ok for that site. I can play the game ok, which
is also played via an exe prompt. On my old laptop everything runs ok and I
thought I had the settings the same for both laptops. Any ideas as to which
I can change to make the pop up exe work? I dont understand how the game can
run and play ok using java but not the additional pop up world map.
I use NTL Netguard with all the featurs activated, but now I have dissabled
some to see if that helps.
My laptop is an Advent 8109
intel celeron M420 1.6GHz
1024MB DDRII 533RAM
Also I have posted the problem to Runescape forums but no one seems to be
able to help me there.
Thanks in adavnce.

Hi Chris,
The small white box with a red cross inside is an ActiveX placeholder.
ActiveX are sorta like exe's but are downloaded from the Internet and run on
your machine and so can present a security risk to your computer.

To enable them go to your Security settings in Internet Options (or double
click on the globe icon on the status bar). You will see there options for
ActiveX controls which you can adjust accordingly.

Alternatively if you trust this games site(remember theres no such thing as
a free lunch, so beware) you can just add the site to your Trusted Zones
list of sites. The default security level for the Trusted Zone allows
ActiveX controls.

Regards.

Thanks for your reply, I have adjusted things to allow active x to run for
this sute but still it hasnt made any difference. I still get the little red
cross in the white box. I am now thinking I should upgrade my explorer to 7,
but I didnt like it when I tried it before on my old laptop. Will this
adjust my setting do you think? Would you think it might solve my problem? I
have rebooted after trying your suggestions.
Thanks again.
Chris
