settings not retained

The problem that I'm having is that whenever I make
changes to my desktop, the settings are not retained
after reboot.
I've unchecked 'show clock', but, it reappears after
reboot. And I've also unchecked 'align to grid'(referring
to desktop icons, of course), but, it too reverts after
reboot.
Any idea what could be causing this to occur and how to
correct it?
