Setting up CF in secondary IDE

Guest

Hello Group,

I'm new to XPe.

I'm trying to partition and format a fixed CF (Transcend) which has to sit
on the secondary IDE channel. I'm trying to avoid using a floppy since the
floppy connection off the motherboard is the hard to find 26 pin slim floppy
type.

If I use NTFS i.e. no bootprep, can I partition and format directly on the
XP Pro development system thru a PCMCIA to CF adaptor, using fdisk and format?

What's the base way to set up the CF w/o a floppy drive?

Thankss in advance,

That will work. Another adapter to add to the list. Thanks.

You need to either insall this in a system with XP Pro and prep the drive.
PCMCIA or USBtoCd will not work. Or you can install into the target and use
a DOS boot floppy to prep the drive - FDISK, FORMAT, BOOTPREP. You mentioned
that the target isn't working with a floppy - what about USB floppy?

Does it have to be a floppy (USB or otherwise). Can't I use a USB hard disk
with fdisk, format, bootprep on it or another hard drive not in the primary
master position of the IDE controller.

The CF will sit on a SATA to CF adaptor in the primary master position.

Thanks, and BTW I have your book - it's been very helpful.

Sure, you can use a USB flash disk as a floppy - Boot to DOS and run FDISK,
FORMAT, and BOOTPREP.

Isn't there a general problem (with some exceptions) booting from a USB device?

I've got another hard disk in the target system on primary slave SATA which
has XP Pro on it. Can't I boot to that and run fdisk, etc on the CF i(n the
primary master )from there.

It should work so long as the CF is a SATA drive. You cannot prep the disk
when it is in a PCMCIA slot.
