setting up belkin router

Am trying to hook-up a belkin router thru my cox cable
modem, but it won't recognize internet explorer. Belkin
support says the modem is to strong for this router, it
can't detect the Ip or DNS addresses, any suggestions on
how to set this up without having to get a diff. modem?
