Hello

Can I set up a server with Windows 2000 Pro? If yes then how? Initially
there will be only one client running Windows XP, but may be later I will add
more workstations to the network. Actually I'm doing it just to know how
things work.

Thanks a lot in advance.

It depends one what scale you want and what sort of server functionality
you need.

Windows 2000 Professional can serve files and printers as well as share an
Internet connection, so for a few workstations maybe it's enough.

If you are looking to run Exchange Server, Active Directory or similar then
you will need to use one of Microsoft's Server products as they only
install on the Server family.

For further information see Windows 2000 Help (Start->Help) and type in
"sharing files" etc. under the index tab, or ask again here.

Hope this helps,

I run 2000pro as a server,
web server
file server
print server
mp3 server
internet share
smtp

I also run a router on it so it will do most thing for a small net work with
very little problems.

You are really doing peer-to-peer networking, a server would be a
security model and authentication model that 2000 Pro does not provide.
Your model is limited to 10 connections.

You should look at 2003 SBS or 2003 Server Standard if you want to learn
about Windows server platforms.

Well, Win2K Pro is specifically designed to be a workstation OS, so you
can't really use as a true server, other than for simple file and print
sharing to a maximum of 10 network connections.
