hello,

Server config (1/server): Windows 2000 server with all sp and hotfix up to
date.
Clinet config (8/client): Windows XP Pro with all sp and hotfix up to date
Lan: 100 MB

The problem is that when client logon it's takes about 3-4/minutes and it
stopps on "applying your personal settings..."
so the user takes to long when they logon! I have seen a lot of different
networks but never this problem.
Can someone please get me som guidelines for example dnsproblem, winsproblem
(Must i use WINs in this small network?), or other thing I must think of!?

Regards,
Kenneth

If all your clients are XP, WINS isn't necessary. However, I would guess a
DNS config problem somewhere. Check MS knowledgebase or technet.

I'd agree with a possible DNS problem. This can be checked after the machine comes up. On each machine, go to a command prompt and type IPCONFIG /ALL. This will display all network related information. Do a TRACERT on each DNS server. The do the same thing for each of the other machines. Where do the packets do through and how long for each hop?

Another idea is to check on the server, if the users use non-local user profiles, that the users don't have 350Mb of stuff on their desktop. Check the space in each of the person's user and home areas.

If you posted the server IP info and one of the worst performing machine's IP information, we could also see if it's a network config problem. And do you use DNS? On the Win server?

Hope this helps.

I am having this same issue. I have done numerous searches for "loading your
personal settings" and have tried ALL of the suggestions to no avail.

I have statically assigned dns information to dhcp clients. I have removed
the pc's from the domain and added them back. I have
repaired/reinstalled/re-whatevered the OS and still nogo.

The one and only solution I've found that works is to delete the offending
user account from AD and add them back. This is not a viable solution for me
as it causes undu work for the desktopsupport group to fix the users
profile/desktop settings back to what they were with the old ID.

Can someone please post a workable response to this? I'm about at my wits
end trying to debug why this happens only on a few users but not all of them.

obtw, all servers and workstations are win2k sp4 with all the latest hot
fixes.
