Setting Tools options advanced

After I have split the data base, what do I set the
default open mode under Tools - Options - advanced. I
have a choice of shared or exclusive.
 
If it's a desktop application on a single machine, it doesn't matter. If it is a
network application with multiusers, set it for shared. Setting it for exclusive
will limit access to the database to the first user that opened the database.
