I have a new jvc HD flat panel monitor, I bought it to go with my new win
media pc. it is connected via dvi cable. I cannot get the windows xp program
to appear on the screen in a legible way. Ok I have the whole screen set
right to the corners but the icons and fonts are virtually unreadable, what
do I have to do to get things the way they should be?

First thing... check the documentation to determine the monitor's native
resolution.
Then right-click the Desktop, choose PROPERTIES|SETTINGS and set the video
card to that resolution.

If the correct resolution is not available, install the video card driver
software.
If you have none, try the video card or chip manufacturer's WEBsite.

Once this is done, and the correct aspect ratio is displayed, go here to
enable ClearType, which will improve the display...

ClearType can be set via this page, or a Control Panel applet can be
downloaded - for local control.

That didnt work Dev
I set the res to 1808x1018 which fills my screen (26" JVC FP HDTV Monitor)
then used the cleartype control but my fonts are still very hard to read
especially on web pages

If this is the LT-26X506 it appears that its native resolution is 1366x678.
Try that.
(16:9, 1366x768, 800:1, HDTV)
