Setting pictures as desktop background

I have inconsistent behavior when setting pictures as desktop
background.
In the past the picture coverd the complete desktop. Now, I get multiple
instances of the sam pic in a checkerboard patterm covering the desktop-
and that with the same photo.

How do I control it?

Thanks, it worked.
Leo,
Try RIGHT clicking an empty spot on your Desktop and selecting
PROPERTIES from the menu.. On the resulting window, click on
DESKTOP tab at the top of the window, then in the lower right corner
of the window you will see "POSITION". Use the drop down menu and
select STRETCH and hit APPLY and OK.... That should fix it..
