Setting pictures a desktop background

I have inconsistent behavior when setting pictures a desktop background.
In the past the picture coverd the complete desktop. Now, I get multiple
instances of the sam pic in a checkerboard patterm covering the desktop-
and that with the same photo.

How do I control it?

Open display properties, look at the desktop and set the
function to center or stretch and not tile.
